Our clip was from a British gangster movie set in the late 90’s. Itwould follow mainly that genre but also have aspects of Noir in there as well. Having to follow rules of these genres we found was quite challenging but very rewarding, for instance, Noir likes to take advantage of the darkness in a shot, when we did use the darkness at first we found that it would not look right but after finding the right spots and seeing what we had captured we realised how good it looks. We also had to follow rules to incorporate the entire storyline following a British Gangster plot, this included the types of things we said and the way we walked and even looked at each other.

Our clip was the end scene of the overall film and this is very interesting for the audience because there is quite a lot that needs to be explained. This either causes a large question to be created by viewers which can cause a lot of people being intrigued by it and watching it again and again and also telling others about it. It also gives the possibility for a sequel and even though this project gives to possibility for that, to imagine that this was a feature length film, it is a possibility.

Our influences included many films because of the many different micro features included in our film. The location was taken from “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” because of the context of the scene (a plan being established) which is the same location as when the plan was established in Guy Richie’s 1998 hit. The background sound we felt was very effective in the character establishing scene of “Reservoir Dogs”, Quentin Tarantino’s second film as a writer and director.

I personally took on the role of Editor; this was an enjoyable task as I was in charge of making sure the clip flowed well and made sense as well as other things. To make sure the narrative made sense I had to piece all our shots together and cut them accordingly to make them flow and seem as if the whole thing happened at once. After a while I realised that this was extremely time consuming, so I decided to write a list of things I must do in each lesson, so that I got the editing done by the time set because I did not want to end up wasting any time. However, I also helped with the sound as I found that to make this clip work to the best of our ability both parts had to be working hand-in-hand and so I decided to assist in the choices made in the sound department. We found that most of the sound that was filmed could be scrapped, especially background noise and replaced with artificial sounds to create a more obvious atmosphere which hits the audience more subconsciously because of the lack of a “fuzzy” overtone. I also helped create the soundtrack for the clip, the background band in the bar, the outside scene and the credits.

Altogether, the group worked well to develop genre, character and narrative, we all decided prior to filming what we were going to wear and the costumes also told a lot about the character for instance it was clear Alex was the leader of the group because he was dressed the smartest. This also helped with the genre being established.

An obvious change that was made in our project was that we were meant to have a large amount of dialogue outside, but when getting to the location the noise was too loud so we decided to have no dialogue and to get rid of all the sound and put in car and other noises in during editing. The reason we did not want to do any folly was because we knew how time consuming syncing voices with moving mouths on screen can be, so we kept that to a minimum in other parts.

The audience were able to follow the film completely which means that I made it flow well.

The feedback I received about the editing was very constructive. I was complemented on how the story flowed and the continuity; however there was one part where two clips changed and it was not done as smoothly as possible so it sounded and even looked wrong, but these are all things I can take forward to the next project.

I believe that my skills enabled me to do almost everything I wanted to.

Kev : The plan is you two keep fucking mouths shut for two days until the job. After this meeting me and Joe are heading over 34th street to meet Grey Squirell to sort out some stuff.
Mucker: Grey Squirrell?
Kev: Dont worry about that and listen, I need you to just head home and lay low for 36 hours, at 4 oclock on tuesday you will get a call, head to the location I told you. Ive got a few things to settle with some ...... associates of mine till then

Kev: now listen, I'm trusting you here, which is a lot more than you deserve after last time so look, i know what your capable of, keep your head clear and your finger on the trigger. (Kev walks on camera screen right, then returns after 2 seconds)
Kev: Oh yeah, and DON'T FUCK IT UP!
(Camera angle changes to previous and Kev gets in the passenger seat, then the camera pans left to show Mucker leaving, cameras then follow same as previous script, as Mucker leaves shot camera changes to a close up of Kev and Joe in the car)
Joe: hey boss, wheres bills?

Kev, Joe, Bills and Mucker

Kev- Alex:

Not so much a dominant character but a clear older leader figure. An obvious past and with a cool exterior makes him the most interesting character in the crew.

Joe- Cleve:

An entrepreneur-like character with a desire to one day reach the top of the group of men. A typical londoner much like Tommy in Guy Richie's "Snatch".

Bill- Dan:

In the scene shown he is not a main character at all but this does not mean he is insignificant. He is emotionally attached to the others like brothers, as they are of him and although he does not have a clear trait, he earned his place with loyalty and he brains of the crew.

Mucker- Ed:

The odd one out, the rebellion in many ways, he understands hat he does for a living but questions everything, but never out loud. His facial expressions clearly show he has a history too and he is unaware that he is most likely to fill the shoes of Kev, if they ever needed filling.

Script

Script continuing from version 2

(Joe, Kev, Bills, Mucker are sitting in the bar)

Joe : That sounds like a plan then.
Kev: Alright, I'll show you this stuff then.
Bills: Yeah, gotta take a slash first.
Mucker: I'll wait here, we'll be down in a sec.
Joe: Don't be long or I'm off.

(Bills gets up but camera stays over looking the table, footsteps are emphasized, the shot then shows him entering the toilet, the shot is from the end of the toilet blocks with urinals at the end, after Bills steps up at the urinals, a man then appears from the loo with a red armband, he walks up to Bills and draws a knife from his pocket, Bills unaware. Camera then changes to close up of Mucker's face with him scratching under his lower lip with his thumb, then shaking his head, the camera then moves back to show him sitting at the table, he downs the small amount left in his drink, looks to the toilet door and shouts to Bills)

Mucker: I'm waiting out front.

(No answer, camera then changes to the front of Mucker, it then moves with him as he leaves towards the door, when he reaches it it changes to outside the bar, unless we find a bar with a good inside and outside, if we do then the shot will carry on moving to reveal him at the front of the bar, he will then lean to the left of the door. Then the last script Starts.)

Script Version 2

Starts with a mid-shot of a man leaning on a wall, smoking looks like he's waiting for something, then he looks at his watch and turns camera right and walks parallel to a panning shot until he reaches the alley, about a 5 second walk. As he reaches the alley the shot changes to a close-mid-shot of him from the POV of the alley, as he enters the alley, the shot stays in focus (no zoom) but moves backwards to reveal a car and one man standing by on the right hand side of the shot. once the shot has revealed both characters well the shot will stop moving and stay where it is to reveal the car right door opening (car front facing camera, door on the right hand side of screen) then a man leaving the door and shutting it. the shot then changes to a shot facing the right hand side of car having the first 2 men on the left hand side of the screen and the third man walking from right to left with the camera not moving. the camera then changes to a close-shot of the three men together dominating the screen with the camera being placed at the back left of the car having man 2 in the middle, man 1 on right of screen and nearest to camera with man 3 left and furthest from camera, then after likely dialogue and man 2 placing his hand on the boot, the camera changes to a dark screen for no more than 0.5 seconds with it appearing that the camera angle is from the POV of the boot, with it opening revealing the 3 men (make sure that they have stayed in place (continuity). they then discuss main part of the scene (dialogue yet to be finalized) then when dialogue has finished, then the boot is shut(emphasis on the diagetic sound of the boot shutting) and shot changes back to the same one as before, the shot of the right of the car, man 3 then returns to his car as before with man 2 getting in the passenger seat, walking about a metre behind man 1 so both are seen on screen (man 3 not covering him) and then the shot pans to man 1 leaving screen left. mid-way through him leaving the shot changes to show his front and him walking towards the camera, he then turns screen left (opposite sid to where he came in) with the camera turning steady and him walking away but with the camera stayin stil, and the screen gradually fading to black. Colour, Black and White or Sepia?

At this moment in time we are yet to decide on which type of film grading we want to use. all three has their own advantages and there are many things we have to decide before we decide which film grading we want to use. if we were to use black and white, it wold make the film look more defined and dark/gloomy, which will help set the mood of the film, because the idea of a scene we are trying to make, that would be suitable. Where as colour will mean we can express characters attitude and character with clothes, also it will show the mood of the room really well as well. Sepia will act very much like black and white, but will give a different mood to the characters and to the room, however the mood it gives might not be the right one for the scene we are doing. We will give this some thought and decide in the next couple of days.

The general consensus of our story is that of gang rivalry. So basically there are many gangs in the area and the hugest gang has been totally desomated by the other gangs in the area. There are only 3 members of the lead gang left, each of them with a particular set of skills. Regel Rodriguez, Johnny Bullets, and Lee Dynamite, an assassin, explosives expert, and hitman. They have come together to abolish and destroy the enemy gangs with just the three of them. They are in a bar plotting how the will obliterate and end the other gangs.
